Risograph Color Chart

We have 20 Riso inks. Try them on different papers or layer two colors and see what happens. The swatches on this page are a starting point. Come see the printed chart at our Tamachi studio and choose an ink for your own print. See Risograph printing at NOT GUTTER (by reservation).

  • Colors may look different depending on your monitor, phone, or browser. Fluorescent Pink, Fluorescent Orange, and Fluorescent Green in particular look much brighter on paper than a screen can show.
  • Prepare one grayscale separation per ink. Choose the actual ink color at the studio when it’s time to print.
  • The black value in your file controls the ink density. For large solid areas and photos, use K80–90% or lower as a starting point. For four-color work or overlapping dark areas, we may ask you to reduce some plates to K70–80% or lower. The right density depends on the artwork, number of colors, and paper, so adjust it with test prints.
    Riso inks are slightly transparent. Layer Blue over Yellow, for example, and you’ll get a shade of green. Each ink color is printed in a separate pass, which is why you plan the layers when you make your file. See how to prepare Risograph data.
    Fluorescent inks and dense solids can transfer onto your hands or other sheets right after printing. Let the prints rest before stacking them to take home.

We made these charts from leftover sheets printed by visitors and our own studio. We picked out colors and textures we wanted to keep and gave them another use.

We made them with design team _MISHMASH and silkscreened the covers and cases ourselves. Each one has its own mix of colors and textures.
